ABOUT NSS
NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME– “NOT ME BUT YOU”
The National Service Scheme (NSS) was launched in India on 24th September 1969, on the birth centenary of Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation. The NSS is a government-sponsored voluntary organization under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India.
The NSS was inspired by the ideals and philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi, who believed in the concept of “selfless service” or “Seva” as a means of social upliftment. The program was envisaged to engage students in constructive and meaningful social activities while they pursued their higher education.
The NSS operates on the principle of “Education through Service” and focuses on the overall development of the student’s personality through community service. NSS volunteers engage in a wide range of activities, including literacy campaigns, health and hygiene awareness, blood donation drives, environmental conservation, rural development projects, and disaster management initiatives.
Apart from the regular community service activities. The NSS program was initially implemented in 37 universities and later extended to cover all universities and colleges across India. Today, there are over 3 million NSS volunteers working in over 35,000 colleges and universities across India. NSS has helped to improve the lives of people in rural areas, to promote national integration, and to create awareness about social issues.
