Fashion Technology

Course Overview

Fashion is always based on creativity and skills of designers. Today it is hard to imagine life without fashion. Fashion is forever but trends will be new. The fashion technology department has exposed the students towards various happenings in the field of fashion. Fashion is the inner feeling of human being to present themselves. Fashion changes according today's life.

Features of Diploma Courses

“Practice makes man perfect” is an old saying and this world is a new order world and for that we have changed the quote as “Practice for Perfection” which is the caption for our IT club called Sadhana. SADHANA is a weekly event conducted by students for students to improve their soft skills and to practice certain skills needed for their survival in the software industry.

Various events like were conducted by students for the students:

  • Candidates will be trained in advanced stitching, sketching, embroidery, illustrations and overall management of boutique.
  • Students can exhibit costumes designed by them in the College Fashion show and intercollegiate design contests.
  • Every year industrial visits are organized for the benefit of the students to know the procedure, new methods of working, sampling, cutting, finishing and flow of work and current trends and also about various machines used in the industry.
  • Students with good performance will be placed in reputed garment industries.

Objectives of the Course

On completion of this course, the students will be able to:

  1. Set up their own boutique
  2. Work in a garment industry
  3. Start a sewing and designing school
  4. Become a freelancer fashion designer

Eligibility

  • Students who have completed S.S.L.C or equivalent exam are eligible to join this course.
  • Any candidate who has the skill and aptitude of learning and fulfils the above criteria followed by an interview is eligible for admission.
  • Candidates must have prior knowledge of stitching with measurement. (Only for Programmes 2 and 3)
  • There is no age limit for enrollment.
  • Students/ Home-makers/ fashion enthusiasts etc., can benefit from this course.

Admission Procedure

  • Candidates can procure prospectus from Surana College office by paying Rs.100/- only in cash or A/c payee D.D drawn in favor of Surana College.
  • The following documents must be furnished at the time of admission:
    1. 10th (or equivalent) marks card along with the marks card of the highest qualification
    2. 4 passport sized photos
    3. Address proof

Timings

  • Course will commence from June and the final exams will be in the month of May.
  • Classes will be conducted from 09 am- 02:30 pm on all working days (Monday – Friday). Saturday 09:00 am – 01:00 pm.

Faculty

The college has an excellent team of well qualified and experienced teachers who are rated on their knowledge and class room performance. It is also equipped with the services of distinguished and eminent visiting faculty who will be delivering the guest lectures and seminars. Classes will be conducted under the able guidance of course Director.

Examination

The board of examiners of Surana College will conduct the theory and practical examination and evaluate as per the norms prescribed in curriculum.

Syllabus of Diploma in Boutique Management

Module 1 – Fundamentals of Sewing Techniques

  1. “Tools and Equipment” used in tailoring.
  2. Measurements.
  3. Knowledge of drafting, cutting, sewing, finishing and packing.
  4. Knowledge of seams, darts, tucks, pleats, gathers, plackets, neck design, sleeves, collars, piping.
  5. Shrinking and pressing

Module 2–Pattern Making

  1. Knowledge of sewing machines.
  2. Defects: Causes and remedies while stitching.
  3. .Knowledge of paper pattern and layout and estimation.
  4. Basic stitches used in sewing technology.

Module 3 – Garment construction

  1. Babies garment.
  2. Girls garment.
  3. Teenage garment.
  4. Women’s garment.

Module – 4- Surface Ornamentation

  1. Colours – schemes and harmonies.
  2. Introduction to embroidery
  3. Care and maintenance.
  4. Transferring the design
  5. Tools and Equipment.
  6. Basic hand embroidery stitches
  7.  State embroidery.(Kasoothi of Karnataka, - Chikankariof Lucknow, Kutch of Gujarat).
  8. Selection of fabric, yarn, frame, needles, stitches.
  9. Project on any 2embroidery work.
  10. Selection of fabric for Painting.
  11. Tools and equipment.
  12. Fabric painting technique.
  13. Knowledge of textile.
  14. Weaving.
  15. Finishes of fabric.
  16. Tie and dyeing technique, Block printing.
  17. Project work.

Module –5- Fashion Illustration

  1. Definition of fashion designing, technical terms, Selection of fabrics – colour schemes in garments.
  2. Knowledge of line drawing, types of motifs, object drawing.
  3. Human anatomy – knowledge of 8 head theory and its uses.
  4. Study of figures.
  5. Fashion promotion.
  6. Fashion accessories and jewelries.

Module –6-Zardosi

  1. Tools  and equipment
  2. Knowledge and practice of basic stitches
  3. Selection of design and embroidery.
  4. Working on project for blouse.

Other activites conducted in the department

  • Extra-curricular activities like nail art, pot painting, fabric painting, hairstyle etc..are conducted
  • The students of our department had an industrial visit on 5thFebruary 2012 to GOGO International Company situated at DodaballapurRoad, Yelahanka,Bangalore.
  • Students also visited Laguna Clothing on Kanakapura Road 13th March 2013.
  • Students participated in various inter-collegiate competitions held at colleges such as St. Joseph's, C.B.Bhandari Jain,  S.J.R.C, Sindhi, Maharani Ammani, Christ colleges for various activities like Rangoli, Card making, Jewellery Designing, Sketching, Collage work, Face painting, Mehandi.
  • Students performedat a fashion show conducted by Dream's Zone.
  • Students are encouraged to participate in inter-class as well as inter-collegiate competition.
